The yard later served Staverton Joinery, which opened in the 1940s and gave the station a new role, with timber being delivered and the finished furniture being transported out in containers. The factory also brought more passenger traffic, with the workers using the train to get to and from the workplace.

A small ground-level signal cabin was provided at Staverton controlling the points to the siding and signals protecting the level crossing. The signalman would also lock and unlock the gates to the main line, but not to those of the goods siding.

The goods facilities and passenger service both closed in 1958, although the station was to reopen in 1967 under preservation by the Dart Valley Railway Association. The station today has been restored to its former Great Western splendour and is as busy as ever with tourists visiting this picturesque heritage branch line, which since 1991 has been operated by the South Devon Railway.
